Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OT) help students achieve the best possible level of independence. This means supporting their health and well being. For some students, this will result in considerably improved levels of ability. We know that for others, though, we are working to maintain an existing skill rather than face its decline. Throughout their work, our Specialist OTs consider each student’s interests, motivation, values and goals.

An expert assessment is essential in identifying a student’s needs. This is carried out through specific, purposeful activities. The OTs work cooperatively with classroom staff, carers, family members and, of course, the student in question to decide upon a treatment plan. An individual programme is then designed, made appropriate to the student’s age and changing needs. During the assessment, the OTs will consider such areas as upper limb function and fine motor skills; gross motor coordination; the use of mobility aids; daily living activities (such as dressing, eating, toileting and writing); sensory skills; play skills; seating and positioning; and access to the environment.

Once the OT assessment has been made, intervention begins. This often involves direct treatment for the student, either as an individual or within a group. Advice or training is given to classroom staff, carers and family members. The OTs frequently advise on accessibility issues, including any adaptations that are required to the physical environment on the RSDCD campus. As necessary, the OTs refer students to outside services. Our OTs also help in obtaining specialist equipment in consultation with education, health and social welfare services, as well as with commercial companies.
