The students at RSDCD have a wide range of highly complex conditions. Our team of Specialist Physiotherapists and Technical Instructors work with young people who are challenged by various types of neurological and developmental difficulties. In supporting our students, our physiotherapy team uses a problem-solving approach based on reflective and systematic clinical reasoning. All physiotherapy assessments are carried out by a Senior Physiotherapist who analyses the results critically before devising an individual management plan for the student concerned. The plan contains a specific set of strategies to meet the assessed needs of the student. Our physiotherapy team supports students in various ways, including: maintaining and promoting soft tissue length; preventing deformity; improving physical function; and aiding mobility.
We provide a variety of therapy options, including Rebound Therapy (which uses a trampoline) and Hydrotherapy and make regular use of the Multigym. Therapy is usually individual, but on occasions it is carried out in a group. Many students have plans drawn up and overseen by a Senior Physiotherapist, who then trains classroom or residential staff to carry out the programme as part of a very frequent routine. As a student moves through adolescence, physiotherapy needs change. Not only will the student change physically, but students are encouraged to assume greater responsibility for themselves. At this stage, the role of the physiotherapy team becomes more consultative, with an emphasis on student independence.
We hold a regular orthotic clinic. Our Physiotherapists work closely with an Orthotist to assess and provide specialist splinting and footware. We also liaise with Primary Care Trusts and commercial suppliers to help ensure the best possible links with external agencies.
