Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists (SaLTs) work with children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

The Speech and Language Therapy team at RCDCD works to ensure that the school, college and residences offer a high quality communication environment suited to the long term needs of the students. Assessment is carried out as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Communication strategies are tailored individually to each student’s needs and monitored closely to evaluate their success. The Speech and Language Therapy team comprises four specialists, each of whom contributes their particular experience and expertise on a part-time basis. Between them, they provide an effective service for students presenting a wide range of complex communication difficulties. They also advise on eating, drinking and swallowing. The SaLTs have a key role at RSDCD, in that strategies for the development of our students’ communication skills are threaded throughout the formal curriculum and the extended curriculum. Clearly, as students’ communication skills develop they will be able to interact more effectively with the people around them, learn more quickly, show less frustration, and, generally, enjoy a better quality of life.
